SUMMARY:Headlands Exhibit: Wall Space 2025: Forrest Gander
DESCRIPTION:When\nJuly 30\, 2025 – December 31\, 2025\n\n\nWhere\nHeadlands\, The Commons\n\n\nPrice\nFree\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCreated by Rotterdam-based designer Chris Kabel\, Wall Space is a sculptural installation that turns Headlands’ building façade into a canvas for commissioned texts. Inspired by historical movie theater marquees\, a hidden armature on the side of the building holds metal mesh letters that respond to the changing light\, visible to viewers as cast shadows. The letters are reconfigured into a new poem several times a year. \nFor this iteration of Wall Space\, we are grateful to host the writing of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Forrest Gander. \nArtist Statement \nThere are long traditions of the pastoral\, poetry centered on nature or landscape\, in both Eastern and Western language literature. I’m less interested in “nature poetry”—where nature features as theme—than in poetry which investigates—both thematically and formally—the relationship between nature and culture\, language and perception. What we’ve perpetrated on our environment has certainly affected a poet’s means and material. My Wall Poem developed slowly in my mind during several ritual hikes—circumambulations—around nearby Mount Tamalpais. I hope the poem suggests\, in a way that doesn’t simply supplement the rational intellect\, but offers incommensurable modes of insight\, our mutualism with this revered and very particular place. \nFor years\, I’ve come to Headlands to see and celebrate art\, artists\, and the landscape. Aki Onda’s musical installation\, Dong Li’s reading of his poetry\, Joshua Michelle-Ross’s eco-choral performance\, and hikes around the Marin coastline have inspired me. \nWall Space Exhibition Opening (July 30\, 2026)\nThe evening begins at 6:00PM with drinks in our Mess Hall\, followed by a family-style supper at 6:30PM. Around 7:40PM\, we’ll gather outdoors in The Commons\, where Forrest Gander will be joined by composer and cellist Theresa Wong (AIR ‘09) and multi-disciplinary artist Ashwini Bhat to present Embrace\, a collaborative performance during the activation ceremony of the Wall Space commission. \nProgram:\n6PM – Event starts\n6:30PM –  Welcome remarks\n6:40PM – Dinner served\n7:40PM – Wall Space Activation Ceremony\n8PM –  Event concludes \nGuests will be invited to take a seed-ball with them to plant and germinate in their gardens. \nMore info here\nTickets are required for dinner. The company recently returned from the European premiere of the James Joyce Ballet in Dublin\, Ireland\, marking an exciting expansion of its international presence\, with additional performances in New York and San Francisco. \nPart I: James Joyce \nRoszak’s James Joyce Ballet draws from The Dead\, Ulysses\, and Finnegans Wake\, bringing Joyce’s richly layered narratives into a vivid physical language. The work explores the emotional and psychological landscapes of Joyce\, Nora Barnacle\, and their daughter Lucia Joyce\, weaving themes of memory\, longing\, and identity. Featured artists include dancers from American Ballet Theatre and Pacific Northwest Ballet\, whose performances bring depth and vitality to Roszak’s vision. \n“So engaging was last night’s performance. Roszak interprets Dickinson as deeply psychological\, modern\, and radical. \nA scientist of the soul\, Dickinson approaches themes of love\, pain\, and death with striking fearlessness. Her correspondence reveals a passionate and expansive spirit\, shaped by the constraints of the Victorian era yet transcending them. In Roszak’s interpretation\, Dickinson’s voice emerges as both intimate and universal\, echoing her own words: a “soul of fire in a shell of pearl.” \n“Roszak translates the poetry into eloquent physical language and poignantly illuminates the soul of the poet.”\n— Contra Costa Times \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet the Artists\nMax Barker\, dancer \nMax Barker began dancing at age five at the ABT JKO School\, where he trained for 9 years. In 2020\, he was a finalist at the Prix de Lausanne. He continued his training privately for 2 years at the Fabrice Herrault Studio before joining the Royal Ballet School in London. During his time there\, he performed on the stage of the Royal Opera House and in Yondering with the Hamburg Ballet for John Neumeier’s 50th Anniversary. Barker danced with Balletto di Venezia in Venice\, Florence\, across northern Italy\, and in Dublin in July of 2025. He has also performed as a guest artist in YAGP galas in Tampa\, New York City\, Milan\, and Lake Como. Barker joined ABT Studio Company in September 2023 under the artistic direction of Sascha Radetsky. He has originated roles in ballets by Amy Hall Garner and Houston Thomas\, and performed in commissioned works by Jamar Roberts\, Lauren Lovette\, James Whiteside\, and \nBrady Farrar. His repertoire includes the principal role in Country Garden from Twyla Tharp’s Brief Fling; pas de deuxes – Black Swan\, Diana & Acteon\, and Gerald Arpino’s Birthday Variations\, the Neapolitan Dance from Swan Lake; the solo boy in Jerome Robbins’ Interplay; and George Balanchine’s Tarantella. In January 2026 he performed Le Corsaire and Black Swan for E’prodictions Gala in Seoul\, South Korea. He has also performed in Alexei Ratmansky’s The Nutcracker and Firebird with the main Company of American Ballet Theatre and is now an Apprentice with ABT. \nAllegra Carlin\, dancer \nShe trained with and performs alongside Miami City Ballet\, and is currently continuing her training and performance work with Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle. She has also performed in choreography by Kathryn Roszak with the San Francisco Symphony\, including a groundbreaking ballet that incorporated a robotic element by Carol Reiley—marking the first time the symphony presented a ballet featuring robotics. \nKatelyn Wilson\, soprano \nSan Francisco based soprano Katelyn Wilson is known for her warm\, velvet toned lyric soprano and expressive storytelling. Most recently\, she appeared as Mimì in the San Francisco Opera Guild’s production of La Bohème. She was a finalist in the Chicago Musicians Club for Women Competition and a semifinalist in the Zachary Society National Vocal Competition. \nMiss Wilson is particularly drawn to repertoire that explores the intersection of poetry and music\, from the art song tradition to contemporary American works. A frequent interpreter of Gordon Getty’s music\, she is honored to perform selections from The White Election\, Mr. Getty’s monumental setting of thirty-two poems by Emily Dickinson. \nKevin Korth\, pianist \nAs an in-demand recitalist and coach\, pianist Kevin Korth has collaborated with such legendary artists as Isabel Leonard\, Jake Heggie\, Nadine Sierra\, Frederica von Stade\, Anthony Roth Costanzo\, Sasha Cooke\, Davóne Tines\, John Holiday\, and Deborah Voigt. Praised by Gramophone for playing that is “superb”\, and “full of color and character\,” his debut album\, Out of the Shadows\, a recording of American art song with soprano Lisa Delan and cellist Matt Haimovitz on the Pentatone Classics label was warmly received. As an avid interpreter of contemporary work\, the album features premieres by Jack Perla and David Garner\, in addition to previously unrecorded works by Norman Dello Joio and John Kander. Last fall brought the release of his newest album for the Pentatone Label\, a collection of chamber music by composer David Conte. Other recent recordings include an album of Brahms\, Mussorgsky\, and Schubert songs with baritone Lester Lynch for Pentatone\, and an album of Robinson Jeffers settings by composer Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli with mezzo-soprano Buffy Baggott for the Delos label. A frequent recital artist for Festival Napa Valley\, other recent performances include a concert appearance at Teatro di San Carlo in Naples\, a concert for Marilyn Horne’s 90th birthday celebration\, and a collaboration with jazz legend Dee Dee Bridgewater. Mr. Korth currently holds a position on the vocal coaching faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. \nHoward Swain\, actor \nHoward Swain is a seasoned actor with deep roots in the San Francisco Bay Area theater scene\, holding a long-standing association with the American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.). His stage work spans classical and contemporary productions\, with recent credits including The Cherry Orchard at Marin Theatre (2026)\, Eureka Day (2025)\, and Persuasion at San Jose Stage Company. \nIn film and television\, his notable credits include Cherry 2000 (1987)\, Miracle Mile (1988)\, and Star Wars: Rebel Assault II — The Hidden Empire (1995). His Off-Broadway work includes Horizon (2007). \nToday\, Swain remains an active presence in the Bay Area theater scene\, where he is widely respected as one of the region’s most accomplished and trusted stage actors. \nKathryn Roszak\, Founder/Artistic Director \nKathryn Roszak is Artistic Director of Danse Lumiere\, a choreographer\, and an advocate for women in dance. She is committed to supporting equity and diversity in the arts. She founded the Women Directors\, Choreographers\, and Composers Residency at Djerassi Resident Artists Program\, in San Francisco and New York City. Her major choreography credits include being presented by Martha Graham Dance Series/Graham Gathering and San Francisco Symphony\, in addition to working for American Conservatory Theatre and San Francisco Ballet. In NYC\, her choreography has been presented by the 92-Y\, La MaMa\, and Scandinavia House. Select grants include Laurance S. SUMMARY:Headlands Exhibit: Wall Space 2025: Forrest Gander
DESCRIPTION:When\nJuly 30\, 2025 – December 31\, 2025\n\n\nWhere\nHeadlands\, The Commons\n\n\nPrice\nFree\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCreated by Rotterdam-based designer Chris Kabel\, Wall Space is a sculptural installation that turns Headlands’ building façade into a canvas for commissioned texts. Inspired by historical movie theater marquees\, a hidden armature on the side of the building holds metal mesh letters that respond to the changing light\, visible to viewers as cast shadows. The letters are reconfigured into a new poem several times a year. \nFor this iteration of Wall Space\, we are grateful to host the writing of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Forrest Gander. \nArtist Statement \nThere are long traditions of the pastoral\, poetry centered on nature or landscape\, in both Eastern and Western language literature. I’m less interested in “nature poetry”—where nature features as theme—than in poetry which investigates—both thematically and formally—the relationship between nature and culture\, language and perception. What we’ve perpetrated on our environment has certainly affected a poet’s means and material. My Wall Poem developed slowly in my mind during several ritual hikes—circumambulations—around nearby Mount Tamalpais. I hope the poem suggests\, in a way that doesn’t simply supplement the rational intellect\, but offers incommensurable modes of insight\, our mutualism with this revered and very particular place. \nFor years\, I’ve come to Headlands to see and celebrate art\, artists\, and the landscape. Aki Onda’s musical installation\, Dong Li’s reading of his poetry\, Joshua Michelle-Ross’s eco-choral performance\, and hikes around the Marin coastline have inspired me. \nWall Space Exhibition Opening (July 30\, 2026)\nThe evening begins at 6:00PM with drinks in our Mess Hall\, followed by a family-style supper at 6:30PM. Around 7:40PM\, we’ll gather outdoors in The Commons\, where Forrest Gander will be joined by composer and cellist Theresa Wong (AIR ‘09) and multi-disciplinary artist Ashwini Bhat to present Embrace\, a collaborative performance during the activation ceremony of the Wall Space commission. \nProgram:\n6PM – Event starts\n6:30PM –  Welcome remarks\n6:40PM – Dinner served\n7:40PM – Wall Space Activation Ceremony\n8PM –  Event concludes \nGuests will be invited to take a seed-ball with them to plant and germinate in their gardens. \nMore info here\nTickets are required for dinner. Meyer’s deep affinity for the cities she inhabits and visits\, especially San Francisco and New York\, is evident in her artwork. She captures the unique essence of these urban landscapes at various times\, day and night\, depicting their varied atmospheres with a keen eye for detail and composition. Her toothsome paint application reveals her commitment to the combination of traditional technique with contemporary subject matter\, painting alleys\, freeways and traffic signs in the thick impasto of the old masters.

SUMMARY:Headlands Exhibit: Wall Space 2025: Forrest Gander
DESCRIPTION:When\nJuly 30\, 2025 – December 31\, 2025\n\n\nWhere\nHeadlands\, The Commons\n\n\nPrice\nFree\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCreated by Rotterdam-based designer Chris Kabel\, Wall Space is a sculptural installation that turns Headlands’ building façade into a canvas for commissioned texts. Inspired by historical movie theater marquees\, a hidden armature on the side of the building holds metal mesh letters that respond to the changing light\, visible to viewers as cast shadows. The letters are reconfigured into a new poem several times a year. \nFor this iteration of Wall Space\, we are grateful to host the writing of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Forrest Gander. \nArtist Statement \nThere are long traditions of the pastoral\, poetry centered on nature or landscape\, in both Eastern and Western language literature. I’m less interested in “nature poetry”—where nature features as theme—than in poetry which investigates—both thematically and formally—the relationship between nature and culture\, language and perception. What we’ve perpetrated on our environment has certainly affected a poet’s means and material. My Wall Poem developed slowly in my mind during several ritual hikes—circumambulations—around nearby Mount Tamalpais. I hope the poem suggests\, in a way that doesn’t simply supplement the rational intellect\, but offers incommensurable modes of insight\, our mutualism with this revered and very particular place. \nFor years\, I’ve come to Headlands to see and celebrate art\, artists\, and the landscape. Aki Onda’s musical installation\, Dong Li’s reading of his poetry\, Joshua Michelle-Ross’s eco-choral performance\, and hikes around the Marin coastline have inspired me. \nWall Space Exhibition Opening (July 30\, 2026)\nThe evening begins at 6:00PM with drinks in our Mess Hall\, followed by a family-style supper at 6:30PM. Around 7:40PM\, we’ll gather outdoors in The Commons\, where Forrest Gander will be joined by composer and cellist Theresa Wong (AIR ‘09) and multi-disciplinary artist Ashwini Bhat to present Embrace\, a collaborative performance during the activation ceremony of the Wall Space commission. \nProgram:\n6PM – Event starts\n6:30PM –  Welcome remarks\n6:40PM – Dinner served\n7:40PM – Wall Space Activation Ceremony\n8PM –  Event concludes \nGuests will be invited to take a seed-ball with them to plant and germinate in their gardens. \nMore info here\nTickets are required for dinner. The group meets weekly for one hour on Zoom\, with the purpose of writing\, sharing\, and deepening our engagement with poetry. \nLucinda brings years of experience and is listed in Poets & Writers. Her 2021 Poetry Collection was published by Golden Antelope Press and she holds a master’s degree in writing. Her vision is to create a space that is focused\, inspiring\, and fully centered on poetry—rather than small talk. \nEach week\, members will have the opportunity to read their work aloud and request the type of feedback they prefer: either constructive/critical or positive-only\, depending on comfort level and personal goals. Meyer’s deep affinity for the cities she inhabits and visits\, especially San Francisco and New York\, is evident in her artwork. She captures the unique essence of these urban landscapes at various times\, day and night\, depicting their varied atmospheres with a keen eye for detail and composition. Her toothsome paint application reveals her commitment to the combination of traditional technique with contemporary subject matter\, painting alleys\, freeways and traffic signs in the thick impasto of the old masters.

Parking cost is per hour\, and Parking Lot #3 (searchable on Maps) usually has the most space. “Sausalito Books by the Bay” at 100 Bay Street is a central address for parking. \nFor the closest parking\, take a right at 100 Bay Street and park in spaces 1113-1159 (within “Tour Bus Parking Lot“). \nOnce parked\, walk north towards The Spinnaker restaurant. You’ll soon come across a wooden boardwalk that leads to our dock (Slip 465). Look for the two red masts! \nIf you are lost\, search “Schooner Freda B” on any Maps app. Or\, see your ticket confirmation for the “boat phone” number to call. \nWhat to Wear \nSailing on the San Francisco Bay offers ever-changing views and exciting microclimates. Weather can change in a minute. Windbreaker\, warm base layer\, gloves\, hat\, scarf\, sunglasses\, and comfortable shoes are strongly encouraged. NO HIGH HEELS!! \n  \nRestroom \nFreda B has a restroom on board. The restroom is available one at a time. We do recommend using shore facilities (link) as a priority prior to sailing. \nTickets \nAdvanced reservation is required for all passengers\, including babes in arms. Passengers 17 and under must be accompanied and always supervised by an adult. We sail in most weather\, including cold\, wind\, fog\, and light showers. On occasion\, we will need to reschedule a sail due to extreme wind or rain. If this is necessary\, you will usually be notified within 24-48 hours of the scheduled sail. \nIf the Captain must cancel due to weather\, our sales team will work with you to reschedule or refund your order. The Captain and Crew monitor the most sophisticated weather channels to make every effort to bring you information in the timeliest manner. As an artist herself\, her work oscillates between realism and abstraction\, elements that are central to each painting. Through this approach\, she expresses her passion for place and process. Meyer’s deep affinity for the cities she inhabits and visits\, especially San Francisco and New York\, is evident in her artwork. She captures the unique essence of these urban landscapes at various times\, day and night\, depicting their varied atmospheres with a keen eye for detail and composition. Her toothsome paint application reveals her commitment to the combination of traditional technique with contemporary subject matter\, painting alleys\, freeways and traffic signs in the thick impasto of the old masters.
